Okay guys. I mentioned on Facebook that I had studio news and it was big, and by that I meant literally big! As in nearly 4 times bigger than my teensy little Stockyards studio. That’s right: WE’VE MOVED!

I had my first shoot in the new studio today – a week earlier than expected but what the heck…it’s close enough to done so I just decided today was a great day to make the announcement! And here is the inaugural baby of the new studio…isn’t he cute?

The new studio is simply amazing. I’m in major love! There’s more natural light, more flexibility, waaaay more space, and it is just so much prettier all around.

But why did I move? Welllll, a few reasons.

  1. Space. Did you ever visit my little Stockyards studio? I called it a studio but really it was just a little room in a building shared with other businesses. It was a great starting point but I quickly outgrew it.
  2. Convenience. The Stockyards is a cool enough place I guess, but it was not the most convenient location. My old studio was on the third floor of a building that had no parking lot, which forced clients to park on the street (ever tried parking in the Stockyards on a busy day??), sometimes around the corner or a couple blocks away. Then they’d have to haul their baby/older kid(s)/diaper bag/infant carrier/purse/whatever-else in to the building, up to the third floor and in to a tiny room where there was not much room to put anything, no waiting area, nowhere to really put all your stuff… UGH. Just not convenient. Definitely not ideal.
  3. Weird-ish. The building was okay but, weird-ish, if I’m being honest. The lobby, elevator and dark/narrow halls creeped me out. It juuuust…wasn’t my style. Again – it was a wonderful place to get started but my goal was to get into a space that was really like a REAL studio and not just a room in a weird-ish old building that I didn’t love.
  4. The straw that broke the camels back: Someone in the building started smoking cigarettes INSIDE the building and the smell permeated my studio every time. Not trying to judge people who smoke, but I don’t want my studio smelling like a bar or an ashtray. It’s just really not what I’m going for.

So I moved! And the new place is perfect. It’s like an adorable little cottage house/dream-come-true all in one! Let’s take a tour, shall we?

Let’s start with the white room – where I take the pictures:

That’s one part of the room. That daybed? I’m obsessed with it. Beautifully simple, perfect for when the whole family wants to be in the shot, but also great for photographing just little ones or mommy and me photos. It’s versatile and neutral and cozy and I’m in love with it!

And then there’s this little rattan piece of vintage heaven. I found this baby online at an antique shop in France and had it shipped here. It’s perfectly timeless if you ask me. And I want to put ALL THE BABIES in here!!!

Here’s the other side of the white room. You might recognize the crib from my old studio (converted to a mini daybed here but it is a crib – I just have one of the side off)

There are six windows in the white room. Six!!! So much natural light. So perfect! My darling husband built this room divider for me. It’s also an amazing backdrop I’m going to use for Cake Smash sessions! And it’s on wheels so I can easily move it wherever! And what else is that you see? A waiting area. Yep. I have one of those now.

Know what else I have? A kitchen!

And a bathroom!

And all the little extras that make this studio my dream. My goal is to make the entire experience a breeze. So naturally I have a collection of hand-picked blankets, precious outfits for newborns – 2T, soft toys, and so much more that my clients are all welcome to use for their shoot here.

So there ya have it! My new, dream studio in a nutshell. There’s more, and certainly more to come! My next project (this weekend) is to photograph all the new cake smash backdrops I’ve been working on. They are going to be SO stinking cute! Make sure you check back next week to see those, too!

Brace yourselves, y’all. I’m blogging. Can you believe it? It’s been over two months. TWO MONTHS!!!!

But really, I have a legit excuse. I’ve been non. stop. shooting. for two months. Like seriously. In October I had 44 sessions. In November, I had exactly half of that amount – 22. Which sounds like nothing compared to 44, but trust me, 22 sessions in a month is still crazy busy. But yea! 66 sessions since the last time I blogged. It’s been insane. Awesome and insane, though. Like, so many wonderful families that I just can’t put into words how blessed I am to have the clients that I have. Clients that have become friends over the years, clients that almost feel like family now, and clients that become instant friends from the minute we meet. It’s awesome and I don’t know how it happened but I’m loving it.

I can’t believe 2016 is coming to a close. That means changes are near for 2017 but one thing you’ll definitely keep seeing from me in the new year are home sessions. Gah…I just love them! And this one? We didn’t even shoot indoors. Not one minute. The whole thing was in their yard and walking down their street and I absolutely love it. If you haven’t booked at Right At Home session with me yet, puh-leeeease do this for yourself in 2017. DO IT!

This was one of the most relaxed, simple, sweetest newborn shoots I’ve ever done. And has become one of my favorites, too.

Stephanie and her husband relocated here and just welcomed their sweet baby girl home after a little stay in the NICU. We had booked their session for after her due date but bumped it up since she was born six weeks early. I loved their precious home, the beautiful light pouring in to their bedroom, and the sweet, feminine wrap and bows her mama had laid out for their shoot. Baby was happy and cooperative the whole time. Dreamy little shoot. Beautiful family. I hope you enjoy the photos!

Relax, I say. Get into it. Some people look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them I like a good dose of chaos in my sessions. That I WANT their kids to bounce around like kids do. If you, like me, grew up in the age of studio shoots + cheesy backgrounds + awkward poses and fake smiles for the camera….then this can feel unnatural. I get it. Even though it is exactly opposite. It is TOTALLY natural. I love it when people get that and are like….OH…GAME ON.

Those sessions, hands down, go the best.

This one started out normal. I walked up…dad answered the door, mom was upstairs getting ready, we made small talk. Then baby brother and mom came in and said hello and instantly, he was all smiles and wanted to be friends.

fort-worth-lifestyle-family-photographer_001PINIMAGE

When big sister came in, I decided we’d start by letting her show me her room. We went upstairs and I fell in love with how bright and cheery her room was! And it didn’t take long for the silliness to start. These parents went all in. Silliness, tickling, getting down on their level and just playing. And it only got more fun from there.

In mom and dad’s room, we turned the silliness up, up, up.

This was a game-on moment. Dad was like – STAND BACK…..

fort-worth-lifestyle-family-photographer_18PINIMAGE

Enough fun upstairs…it was time to go downstairs for the mess-making part of the session. But first, we had to stop and let little guy play with all the shoes, one of his favorite things to do.

fort-worth-lifestyle-family-photographer_19PINIMAGE

I know. It’s probably rude to take pictures of people when they’re crying, BUT THAT POUT!!! And check out the sad look on the little puppy dog’s face as he goes over to check on the baby to make sure he’s okay. Uh…how could I possibly put my camera down at that moment? I couldn’t. Call me rude…but that image is priceless. One day I promise you they’ll want to remember what that adorable little pout looked like….and now they have this photo so they can always remember.

If you know me at all, you know I love a good cake smash. It was little man’s birthday and his sister’s birthday was just a couple days before, so I swung by Leah’s Sweet Treats, picked up a couple sprinkle cakes, and the whole family joined in. Because they’re awesome. 🙂

XOXO-

Who said family photos have to be boring?

Fort Worth Family PhotographerPINIMAGE

Fort Worth Family Photographer

I remember when I got started with photography. It was a hobby and I was eager to practice, practice, practice so one day I could turn this hobby into a living. And I would shoot just about anything to get that practice in. You start to learn your camera, you learn some hard lessons about lighting…but there was something else I couldn’t seem to get down: how to do extended family shoots that weren’t mind-numbingly boring, awkward, and stressful.

Eventually I realized I was approaching them all wrong. I was doing what I “thought I was supposed to be doing”. Let me tell you something that kills creativity in an instant: doing what you think you’re supposed to be doing. I would look photos from other extended family sessions before I would do one so I could get an idea of how to pose people, where to shoot, etc. Unknowingly, doing that would cloud my judgment, kill my creativity, and make me a nervous wreck during the shoots.

I don’t know when that changed. I guess I had a lightbulb moment…or some kind of breakthrough where I finally said TO HECK WITH TRADITIONAL FAMILY SHOOTS. I LIKE FUN!!!!

And that’s what I do now. Fun. Not lining up perfectly posed mannequins with wide eyed, awkward grins that show nobody’s personality. No thanks. That’s not what I’m all about. You probably aren’t either. I’m much more interested in seeing a family for what they really are – A FAMILY. Laughing together. Playing. Being silly. That’s family….so that’s how I do family shoots. Sure – we get a few “safe” shots, but then I quickly get to the fun part, and we linger there for as long as we can! 🙂

Wanna come hang out with me on this awesome bridge in Fort Worth? I promise we’ll have a blast! Email jodie@reveriephotoco.com to book your next session!
