So you’ve taken a really important step and booked your Branding Session…but now what? There’s so much to think about and plan for and outfits are just one component. Let’s walk through how to pick the perfect outfits for your session.
TIP #1: CHOOSE SOMETHING AUTHENTIC TO YOU RATHER THAN SOMETHING CURRENTLY TRENDY.
I know it’s tempting to just jump on whatever is trending right now in the fashion world, but to make the most out of your Branding photos, choose something more authentic to you. It’s okay to add components of current trends, but overall your outfit(s) should look and feel like something you would wear to meet a client.
TIP #2: CONSIDER YOUR BRANDING COLORS
You don’t have to match your branding colors spot-on, but you should select things that compliment your branding colors for a consistent, cohesive theme throughout your website, social media and other marketing pieces.
TIP #3: YOUR OUTFITS SHOULD COMMUNICATE WHAT YOU WANT YOUR CLIENTS TO SEE IN YOU.
Name 3 things you want your clients to “feel” about you right off the bat. Is it approachable, relaxed, and easy to talk to? Then (obviously!) avoid outfits that look stuffy or overly dressy and opt for a more elevated casual look (still professional but approachable). If you want to be known for being glamorous, high-end, and an expert in the luxury space, then choose dressier outfits that match that vibe.
TIP #4: ASK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER IF THEY HAVE ANY THOUGHTS
Some photographers have very specific do’s and don’ts based on their editing style and expertise. Example: Some photographer aren’t great at editing people wearing red or bright orange because it can reflect that color back on to their skin, creating a difficult editing process. While I don’t restrict my clients on colors, some photographers do – so it’s always a good idea to ask if they have any advice or things they really don’t like to photograph (but it’s a GOOD SIGN if your photograph doesn’t restrict and allows you to wear what you want/feel most confident in!)
TIP #5: ALWAYS CHOOSE SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE AND CONFIDENT IN!
Comfort and confidence are KEY to great branding photos. This always translates in your photos. So here are a few things to AVOID: clothes that don’t fit well, clothes that you feel odd in, and clothes that just don’t feel true to you. You should feel ABSOLUTELY AMAZING in whatever you choose. Do NOT underestimate this one – if you haven’t found outfits that make you feel incredible, go back to the drawing board until you find something you want the WORLD to see you in.
And always remember – a good branding photographer will proactively help you with this aspect of your session. You aren’t just paying for “some photos” – you’re paying for an experience and one of THE most important marketing tools to help you attract your ideal client. Hire a photographer who helps you plan the entire session and you’ll walk in to your session feeling and looking amazing and ready!
